Introduction

Tourism is one of the largest industries in the world and is significant to the global economies, cultures, and environments. As tourism continues to be influenced and shaped by social trends, the evolution of technology, and climate change, tourism studies need to reflect and consider new trends, issues and opportunities. This dissertation will consider trends in tourism studies in relation to societal, economic and cultural impacts of tourism and how technology is embedded in the tourism experience.

Tourism Dissertation Titles

1. Sustainable Development of Tourism: Including Ecotourism Initiatives in Developing Nations

Focus: This dissertation will define sustainable tourism with a specific focus on ecotourism as it develops in developing countries to protect the environment and positively benefit the local people.

2. Economic impacts of Tourism on small island countries: A comparative study looking at Caribbean and Pacific Island countries

Focus: To examine tourism’s economic contributions in the context of small island economies. This will be examined in terms of both the positive contributions coming out of tourism as well as potential negative impacts, such as dependency on tourism, economic risks with over tourism, etc.

3. Tourism and Cultural Identity: Globalisation's influence on local customs and heritage

Focus: The impact of tourism on cultural identity will be examined specifically in relation to places where local traditions and heritage are commodified by tourism as a globalised product.

4. Technology and Future Travel Experiences: The rise of AI and virtual tourism experiences

Focus: Looking at the effect of changing technologies such as artificial intelligence, the emergence of virtual reality and augmented reality, and how such innovations are impacting, and changing, travel experiences and use of technology by consumers.

5. Tourism Policy and Crisis Management: The Case of the COVID-19 Pandemic

Focus: This dissertation will investigate tourism policy and crisis management and explore the tourism industry’s response to the pandemic and what this all implies for tourism moving forward globally.

6. Tourism and Urban Development: An Analysis of Prominent Tourism Cities

Focus: Exploring the impacts of tourism on urban planning, urban infrastructure, and the living conditions of residents in important tourism cities (e.g., Paris, New York, Tokyo).

7. Cultural Tourism: A Cross-Cultural Study of Heritage Tourism in Europe and Asia

Focus: This research will discuss cultural tourism with a particular focus on heritage tourism and examine this concept in Europe (e.g., Greece) relative to Asia (e.g., China), along with various issues stem from preservation and commercializing culture.

8. Overtourism and Sustainable Solutions: The Cases of Venice and Barcelona

Focus: The research aims to highlight overtourism in the existing destinations, especially Venice and Barcelona, then explore critically sustainable solutions which aim to reduce the environmental strain and local culture persistence and displacement.

9. The Environmental Effects of Tourism: An Evaluation of the Carbon Impact of Air Travel

Focus: This thesis will evaluate the environmental impacts of tourism (mainly air travel), and the policy and commercial initiatives to mitigate the carbon impact of tourism.

10. The Role of Social Media in Tourism: How Instagram and YouTube Influence Tourism Behaviour

Focus: To consider the influence of Social Media platforms such as Instagram and YouTube in influencing tourism patterns and behaviours, particularly as these relate to the growth of “Instagrammable” destinations.
