Dissertation Topic 1:

Strategies for Climate Change Mitigation: Investigating the Role of Renewable Energy Systems in Carbon Management

Background Context

Transitioning from fossil fuel-based resources to renewable energy resources is one of the primary methods for mitigating climate change and reducing carbon at the global level. The intent of this research study is to investigate how renewable energy systems such as solar, wind, and hydropower can mitigate greenhouse gas emissions specifically in different sectors. Additionally, this research will consider the economic, technology, and societal barriers of significant deployment of renewable energy systems across contextual settings.

Research Questions

1. How are renewable energy systems influencing carbon emissions in transportation, industry, and residential sectors?
2. What economic and infrastructural barriers face renewable energy systems at large-scale deployment?
3. How can policy and regulation support the acceptance of renewable technologies at large-scale in developed and developing contexts?

Potential Implications

  • A better understanding of renewable energy’s role with respect to climate change mitigation.
  • Determination of economic and policy instruments to reduce transition to green energy.
  • An improved vision of ways to integrate into the current energy grid.

Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) of Urban Development Projects: Methods of Achieving Sustainable Outcomes

    Background Context

Urbanization is considered one of the main drivers of environmental degradation, it also is a factual reality for economic development. This research investigates the use of Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) as a mitigation strategy through urban development projects, based on land use, water use, biodiversity, and pollution to reduce potential impacts. This could eventually be a way of promoting sustainable development through urban planning and development.

    Research Questions

    1. What is the current EIA process, and how is it able to identify and reduce environmental risk from urban development?
    2. What practices can facilitate sustainability into urban development which also needs economic development?
    3. What actions can the stakeholder(s) (e.g., local government, private sector, communities) take to improve EIA process overall to enhance sustainability in urban area?

    Potential Implications

  • When new ways to assess and measure the environmental impacts of urbanization will be developed.
  • Provide guidance for sustainable urban development.
  • More co-operation and communication for planning in urban areas with local government, private sector, and communities.

Ecosystem Services: The economic value of nature; and its implications on policy

    Background Context

Ecosystem services (clean air, clean water, pollination services) are essential to human health and wellbeing but generally do not feature within economic models. This project proposes to initiate work to address the ways to assess and determine economic value of ecosystem services, which can inform environmental policy and decision-making.

    Research Questions

    1. What are the best ways to evaluate and quantify the economic value of ecosystem services across ecosystems (e.g. forests, wetlands, coastal and marine)?
    2. How will ecosystem service values be utilized for environmental policy and land-use decisions?
    3. What are the obstacles and constraints to integrate ecosystem services into economic decision-making?

    Potential Implications

  • More understanding of the economic value of ecosystem services.
  • An increased ability to include environmental values into economic policy – decision-making.
  • Improved understanding of need for conservation from economic values attributable to ecosystem services.

Plastic Waste Management: Approaches to decrease waste and lessening environmental degradation

    Background Context

Environment concerns related to plastic pollution is one of the most tangible and concerning issues we must address today; which has serious consequences for wildlife, ecological systems and human health. This research will take a closer look at the number of plastice waste management options that are include waste management sustainability, including recycling, composting, bioplastics, and principles of the circular economy to investigate how these sustainable approaches can be used as a a means to scale solutions to address global plastic waste management.

    Research Questions

    1. What is the most sustainable and effective option of plastic waste management in an urban, rural, and agricultural context?
    2. What are policy and revenue opportunities to facilitate scaling the recycling and adoption of biodegradable products?
    3. What are the barriers to implement a circular economy approach in plastics waste management?

    Potential Impact

  • A better understanding of scalable and sustainable options for plastic waste management (in the application of waste management, plastics)
  • Understanding the relationship between policy and innovation & the decline of plastic pollution
  • Contribution to circular economy model to reduce waste.

Biodiversity Conservation and Land Use: Harmonizing Ecosystem Protection with Human Development

    Background context

Whether we like it or not, human population will keep growing, land keeps getting developed and pressure on land resource increases over time leading to habitat loss and loss of biodiversity. This research will focus on the hybridization of land for agriculture, urbanization and conservation. Secondly, we will analyze land use plans, conservation programs, and global conventions to complement biodiversity conservation with respect to human needs.

    Research Questions

    1. What land use policies are most effectively used to reflect the hybridization of human development and biodiversity conservation?
    2. What impact do protected areas and community-based conservation has on maintaining biodiversity to meet the increasing development pressures on land?
    3. What impact do international conservation agreements such as Convention on Biological Diversity have on national land-use and biodiversity policy?

    Potential Implications

  • Strategies of managing sustainable land-use.
  • Conservation mechanisms that build on biodiversity conservation framework while responding to human development priorities.
  • Knowledge of policies and practices to allow reduced biodiversity lost.
